ASM330LHB, as it will be known, contains a 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis gyroscope, and is AEC-Q100 qualified.
Used in pairs for fail-safe redundancy, with dedicated companion software, it can be used in functional-safety applications up to ASIL B.
“Developed in accordance with the automotive functional-safety standard ISO 26262, the software library has been certified independently by TÜV SÜD,” according to ST. “By implementing dedicated safety mechanisms, including data integrity and accuracy, the library ensures compliance with ASIL B automotive systems.”
“A machine learning algorithm,” in the IC, it continued, “can detect events such as driving, jack up, towing and crash, leveraging the machine learning core technology using just a few microamps.”
ASM330LHB is a multi-chip module, and this is only the sensing part, without the machine learning or state machines
The ML core can be configured to run up to eight flows simultaneously and independently and every flow can generate up to 256 results. The total number of nodes can be up to 512, and results are available in dedicated output registers for the host application processor. It can also produce an interrupt.
On top of this, there are 16 integrated finite state machines that can generate interrupts after detecting user-defined motion patterns such as vehicle moving/stationary or theft, or sensing shock, vibrations or instability.
Full-scale acceleration can be set to ±2, 4, 8 or 16g, then angular rate to ±125, ±250, 500, 1,000, 2,000 to ±4,000°/s. Overall bias instability of 3°/hour is claimed.
Communication is over a choice of I2C I3C or SPI (3- and 4-wire).
Operation is over -40 to +105°C, and it comes in a 2.5 x 3 x 0.8mm 14pad LGA package.
Applications are foreseen in lane centring, emergency braking, cruise assistance and other forms of semi-automated driving up to L2+. It can also “help stabilise sensing systems like radar, lidar and visual cameras”, said ST, and be used in more geenral car body applications.
