$360,000 sold!Nintendo, Sony PlayStation prototype auction ends

Posted on: 10/31/2022

Netease Technology News March 9 news, according to foreign media reports, at an auction held over the weekend, a prototype of Nintendo’s rare game console Play Station was sold for a high price of $360,000. Pets.com and TOYS.COM founder Greg McLemore won the bid, beating out other collectors including Oculus VR CEO Palmer Luckey.

The Play Station, Nintendo’s never-to-market console, was developed in partnership with Sony in 1991 and only 200 prototypes have been produced. Forbes describes it as basically a Super NES with a CD-ROM drive. Valerie McLeckie, an employee at Heritage Auctions, which provided the console, said 199 other prototypes had been destroyed after the Sony-Nintendo deal fell through.

It is reported that the PlayStation prototype was found by a man named Terry Diebold in a box once owned by former Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Olaf Olafsson (Olaf Olafsson) . Both worked for Advanta Corporation, and when the company went bankrupt, the console was one of many items that ended up being auctioned.

McLemore said the console is the most expensive thing he has ever bought outside of the house, and he hopes to set up a museum dedicated to the console and other collections.
