Microchip released a new generation of development tools for edge embedded vision design, helping developers to develop with low-power PolarFire RISC-V SoC FPGAs

Posted on: 11/25/2021

Microchip Technology Inc. recently announced the launch of a second development tool for intelligent embedded vision design for developers using PolarFire RISC-V System-on-Chip (SoC) Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). As the lowest power SoC FPGA among similar products in the industry, PolarFire is also the only product of its kind to support dual 4K video processing and quad-core RISC-V application-level processors, as well as to run real-time operating systems (RTOS) and Linux®And other mid-range devices with rich operating systems.

Microchip released a new generation of development tools for edge embedded vision design, helping developers to develop with low-power PolarFire RISC-V SoC FPGAs

Microchip’s intelligent embedded vision development platform, coupled with the company’s previously released VectorBlox™ software development kit (SDK) and IP, can be used to program the trained neural network using PolarFire devices without prior FPGA expertise. The latest products simplify the development of edge computing solutions in the thermally challenging environment of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and factory automation applications. The IP, hardware and tools of the new platform include:

● Embedded vision-supports the following functions: dual 4K MIPI CSI-2 cameras; based on FPGA mezzanine card (FMC) extended HDMI® 2.0; CoaXPress® 2.0; SDI (6 gbps and 12 gbps); Universal Serial 10 GE Media Independent Interface (USXGMII) MAC IP with auto-negotiation mode; and USB3.1 first generation (Gen1) and second generation (Gen2) protocols.

● Industrial Internet of Things and Factory Automation-Support: Wi-Fi®/Bluetooth®, USB 2.0, SD card, embedded multimedia card (eMMC), fully integrated peripheral interconnect Express (PCIe®) Endpoint and four-channel configuration root port function; and mickroBUS™ connector, which can be used in conjunction with Microchip’s Trust&GO platform to achieve a secure cloud connection.

The new platform supports the Microchip Mi-V RISC-V ecosystem including development tools such as AdaCore, Green Hills Software, Mentor Graphics and Wind River. Commercial RTOS solutions include VxWorks®And Nucleus®, And Zephyr®And FreeRTOS™ and other free solutions. Middleware solutions are available from DornerWorks, Hex Five and Verify Security.

Microchip PolarFire SoC FPGA combines thermal efficiency and defense-level security perfectly, and can be used in intelligent networked systems with only half the power consumption of similar products. PolarFire SoC and intelligent embedded vision platform provide developers with a choice of edge computing based on rich operating systems, hard real-time, 2 MB large memory, and hybrid real-time + rich operating system support. Users can learn one platform to serve three applications.
