Two-wheelers and three-wheelers are gaining traction – on the road and
throughout global markets. According to a
recent McKinsey report, the two-wheeler market is projected to have a compound annual growth rate
of 8.7 percent through 2029 when it will reach a value of about $218
billion.
To meet the growing demand for two-wheelers and to speed the time to
market, NXP and Tessolve , a leading
system productization and silicon engineering solution provider, have
joined forces to take the two-wheeler proof-of-concept design
launched by NXP last November a step further. NXP and Tessolve are now launching a
cost-effective, ready-to-deploy digital connected cluster (DCC) platform
for two-wheeler and three-wheeler vehicle manufacturers and Tier 1
suppliers. Available in a production-ready digital instrument cluster form
factor, the new DCC platform provides a turnkey solution for entry-level,
mass-market scooters and motorcycles. This new DCC platform is also optimized for other vehicles, like tuk-tuks and all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) designed for
sports, farming and industrial use.
The DCC platform combines NXP’s comprehensive silicon and software
portfolio, two-wheeler platform expertise and years of experience and customer support in the automotive industry
with Tessolve’s embedded solutions and systems integration prowess to
address the emerging electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler market. The
cost-efficient DCC platform accelerates and simplifies access to integrated
technologies through one scalable form-factor design that reduces costs and
streamlines development. Vehicle manufacturers can choose to use the
platform “as-is” in their cluster design, or they can work with Tessolve to
customize both the software and hardware aspects of the design according to
their specific vehicle needs.
Designed to drive mass-market digital transformation, the DCC platform
integrate the AW611 Wi-Fi® 6 connectivity solution
and i.MX RT1170 MCU
to deliver rich digital cluster graphics and advanced audio connectivity.
It also leverages the NXP KW45 Bluetooth® Low Energy wireless MCU
to enable secure, wireless access and location functions for riders. When
the KW45 MCU in the digital cluster is registered in popular search
applications, riders can use a smartphone to track the location of their
two-wheeler on a map and trigger a sound/light indication when they are in close
proximity. NXP also offers the multi-channel PF5103 PMIC, enabling power sequence control and fault management,
including power supply for peripheral devices.
The reference platform simplifies the design process for customers by
integrating multiple NXP System-on-Chips (SoCs) and other key components
into a system-on-module (SOM) board based on the versatile Smart Mobility Architecture (SMARC) form factor. The SOM is mounted onto an application
board that provides additional system functions and connectivity to the
display and other vehicle electronic control units (ECUs). The DCC features
a modern, compact reference enclosure designed by Tessolve. Constructed of
ABS plastic, the digital cluster enclosure houses the thin-film transistor
(TFT) display, LED indicators, rider-facing camera, rider input buttons, a
USB 2.0 port, and connectors for power, CAN interface, sensors and other
IOs.
From daily commuters to higher-end vehicles, two-wheelers are becoming
increasingly electrified. Despite the prevalence of combustion
engine-powered scooters and motorcycles, EVs are the fastest growing segment
in the two-wheeler market, propelled by ease of use, rising fuel prices and initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. According to
McKinsey, while only a small percentage of two-wheelers are electrified today, the
electrification of two-wheelers is steadily gaining momentum. McKinsey
expects additional waves of innovation and disruption to take place in the
years ahead. Digital displays for electric two-wheelers will be a
centerpiece of this transformation.
EV companies are pioneering value-added digital features like connected
instrument clusters to entice more drivers toward electric vehicles.
Capitalizing on this trend, two- and three-wheel vehicle manufacturers are
now incorporating digital clusters into their latest models. These displays
offer real-time data on essential parameters like speed, RPM, location,
navigation, temperature and range—enhancing rider focus and elevating the
overall riding experience.
Connected digital displays with rich graphics are essential to the safe
operation of range-limited EVs, providing critical information that helps
drivers view battery levels, charging statistics, navigation details and
locations of charging stations. NXP’s DCC platform is designed to enable
OEMs to deliver these essential capabilities while supporting essential
connectivity use cases that improve the user experience including
hands-free calling, smartphone pairing, music sharing, phone projection,
location tracking, secure access, FindMy, over-the-air (OTA) updates, fleet
management and many more capabilities.
