Shenzhen Tong is using NXP’s Trimension UWB portfolio to enable contactless ticketing for mass transit, allowing
riders
to simply walk through ticketing gates without tapping a phone or transit card.
NXP® Semiconductors today announced its Trimension® portfolio will be deployed by Shenzhen Tong, the provider of
automatic fare collection systems to the Shenzhen Transit, as part of a new Ultra-Wideband (UWB)-based ticket
platform.
Trimension UWB will allow mass transit riders to simply walk through ticketing gates with their phone in their
pocket or
bag, without the need to stop and tap a phone or transit card.
Contactless ticketing enabled by NFC has quickly become commonplace, offering convenient tap-and-go solutions to
riders.
UWB technology represents the next evolution in hands-free ticketing, streamlining and speeding the entry process
further. UWB ranging allows the transit system to automatically detect the rider via their UWB-enabled smartphone,
which
can remain in a pocket or bag, and seamlessly admit them through entry gates to begin their mass transit journey.
This
seamless process improves the overall user experience, making it easier for commuters with their hands full or
needing
assistance through traditional gates, while also allowing transit systems to accommodate more people with shorter
lines.
“Building on our success as the first to launch a combined NFC with Secure Element solution for contactless
ticketing in
China, we are delivering new innovations with UWB. We worked closely with Shenzhen Tong to define and enable an
end-to-end user experience encompassing both the UWB-enabled transit gate and the user’s mobile device. By using
NXP’s
Trimension UWB products, we’re creating a truly seamless user experience for riders of Shenzhen’s mass transit.”Jerome Legros, Vice President, Secure Embedded Transactions, NXP.
Shenzhen Tong’s new UWB-based hands-free ticketing solution will leverage the Trimension SR100 UWB solution in mobile
devices and SR150 UWB solution in transit gates. Designed for large and highly populated infrastructure, such as
urban
metros, access control installations or untracked indoor navigation applications, Trimension SR100 and SR150
leverage
secure ranging and data transfer to identify the user’s location with high levels of precision, even in crowded
environments. The Trimension SR200 will also support UWB transit applications, enabling the latest generations of
mobile
phones with these capabilities.
Shenzhen Tong has worked closely with the operator of Shenzhen Yunba Line 1 and jointly with mobile phone
manufacturers,
TSM service providers, and so on, to successfully launch the commercial use of a UWB-based system at Pingshan
high-speed
Railway Station and SMIC Station. Shenzhen Tong expects to complete full deployment at all 11 stations of the Yunba
Line
by the end of October 2024.
